Picture two five star reviews for the same pair of boots. One says "Great product", the other says they remained comfortable through a wet week of long dog walks, and that they run half a size small.
Both count towards your rating. Only one helps the next person decide. With Black Friday on the horizon, the reviews you collect now are the ones shoppers will be reading when it matters most.
A star rating tells a shopper whether the customer was happy. It does not tell them whether a jacket is warm enough for a commute, or if a serum suits sensitive skin. However, these are the types of questions shoppers actually come to your store with.
Detailed reviews answer a shopperâs question in the customerâs own words. They also give AI tools something to work with, and in 2026 thatâs no longer optional. More than half of consumers (55%) now say AI influences how they discover products, and over a quarter have used AI tools to research or decide what to buy in the past three months. When a shopper asks an AI assistant which boots are good for dog walks, a review that mentions"dog walks" is something it can pick up. âGreat productâ is not.
The takeaway: more reviews are good, but more useful reviews are better.
Customers write short reviews when the review request is too simple. A generic "How did we do?" gets an equally generic answer. This isn't the customer's fault, and fortunately, it's a straightforward problem to fix.
Three things shape the quality of your productâs review: when you ask, how you ask, and what you ask. You control all three already, inside your REVIEWS.io review request flows.
Asking for a review too early means the package has barely been opened. Ask too late and the customerâs initial impression has faded. The sweet spot is once the customer has likely had time to use the product.
Automated review request flows simplify this scheduling. Standard requests trigger seven days following REVIEWS.io receiving the order data. However, where products such as skincare require a longer timeframe, your review request can be delayed accordingly. You can also send different types of requests based on the product bought, as well as a follow up by email or SMS if someone has not yet responded.
The takeaway: match your review request timing to how long the product takes to prove itself.
Review Attributes let you add short questions to your review form, so customers provide more than just a star rating. For example, "How does the fit compare to your usual size?" or "What did you use it for?"
Review Attributes has over 1,300 preset questions grouped by industry. Answers can be single choice, multiple choice, yes or no, a sliding scale, or free text. Answers can show on your review widgets and work as filters, so a shopper can find reviews from people like them. You can also keep an answer private if it is just for you.
Integrating review requests directly into your existing emails is easy if you use Klaviyo. With the REVIEWS.io and Klaviyo connector, review data lands on each shopper's Klaviyo profile, including the answers to your Review Attributes. This means you can put star ratings and customer photos into your abandoned cart flow, or invite your happiest reviewers to a launch first, for example.
What you should check for in your review request flows:Â
Do these checks over the next couple of weeks so reviews have plenty of time to arrive before the Black Friday rush.
All of the above is already in your REVIEWS.io dashboard. Review request flows can be found under Invitations > Flow Sequences, and Review Attributes are found under Collection > Attributes. Both are available on our Grow plan and above. If you are currently on a different plan, our advice on timing and wording still applies to the review requests you send today.
None of this guarantees a set number of extra reviews. However, it does guarantee that your customers receive a clearer review form, which is likely to provide you with more detailed reviews.
Actions to take this week: Take 15 minutes this week to open your review request flows, check the timing and the wording, and switch on two or three review attributes. Both future shoppers and the AI tools helping them will have significantly richer insights to draw from.
Detailed reviews answer shoppersâ real questions, such as fit or comfort, in the customerâs own words. They also give AI tools specific information to pick up when recommending products.
Send it once the customer has had time to use the product. Standard requests go out seven days after REVIEWS.io receives the order data, and you can add a longer delay for products like skincare that take longer to judge.
Theyâre short questions added to your review form, such as how the fit compares to the customerâs usual size. You can choose from over 1,300 preset questions, and the answers can show on your widgets as filters.
